The Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes is the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's (JDRF) fastest growing fundraiser, and we are currently booking schools for the spring of 2013 and the 2013-2014 school year!
Some of the highlights of this program include:
- Your school receives 10 percent of the money raised back in cash.
- We teach the kids about diabetes and making healthy diet and exercise choices. We then give them ideas on how to collect donations.
- Your school will receive a banner to display, depending on the amount raised. Silver star banners are given for amounts raised between $1,000-$4,999. Gold star banners are given for amounts raised between $5,000-$9,999 and Diamond star banners are given for more than $10,000 raised.
Students in participating schools are given two weeks to collect donations. Then, two weeks after we teach the classes, we hold a Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes on the school campus. JDRF volunteers return to the school on the walk day and help to run the walk. JDRF takes care of collecting the money. The teacher never has to collect, count, or keep track of the money. We do all the work!
Students also earn fabulous prizes depending on the amount of money they collect and we will credit your family's walk team for the amount raised by your child's school.
The incidence of type 1 diabetes is going up three percent a year. Each day, another 35 children are diagnosed with diabetes, just in the United States - that's the size of a classroom of students and all the more reason we need to fund research and find a cure as soon as possible! The two goals of this program are to teach students about diabetes: what it is, risk factors, symptoms, complications and treatment and to give students a chance to put us closer to a cure for diabetes through fundraising.
Let your child's school be known as one that helped cure diabetes. Here is what we need from you: help us to schedule a meeting with their physical education teacher, nurse, principal or appropriate administrator to fill them in on how the JDRF Kids Walk program works and to set a date for your school's walk. Since its founding in 1970, JDRF has awarded more than $1.6 billion to diabetes research. Past JDRF efforts have helped to significantly advance the care of people with this disease, and have expanded the critical scientific understanding of T1D. JDRF will not rest until T1D is fully conquered. More than 80 percent of JDRF's expenditures directly support research and research-related education.
