Spelling words such as “coalesce” or “hypochondria” are no challenge for Sukanya “Sue” Roy.
For the third year in a row, she has been named the Abington Heights Middle School spelling bee champion.
Now a seventh-grader, Sue has won the fifth- through eighth-grade spelling bee.
Last year as a sixth-grader, she also won the regional spelling bee, defeating area students who were up to two years older than she. She earned an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., at the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee, where she tied for 12th place.
She will now head for the Times Leader/Scripps NEPA Regional Spelling Bee at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 7, at The Woodlands Inn & Resort, Plains Township.
More than 300 students competed in the oral spelling bee at the middle school.
The runner-up for the entire school and sixth-grade champion was Ellie Sullum, who was also last year’s fifth-grade champion. The eighth-grade champion is Richard Potter, with Sal Bulzoni in second place.
The fifth grade needed to have a spelldown among Kevin Hu, Yaasat Nayeem and Mikayla Spott to name Yaasat Nayeem as the fifth-grade champion.
The middle school spelling bee is coordinated by eighth-grade language arts teacher Barb McGee. Many team teachers help with the grading of the qualifying tests. Mike Boylan, an eighth-grade teacher, has served as a judge for several years.
