Fifth-grade students at the Lackawanna Trail Elementary Center in Factoryville recently participated in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Design Challenge. Part of this year’s challenge was to create an environmentally friendly people mover that would travel at least four feet across a table and have at least one obstacle. These obstacles were to be chosen and designed by a team that consisted of four students using K’Nex. The obstacle could be a hill, curve or landforms. The students had to be able to discuss and answer questions concerning different aspects of the vehicle including how the vehicle is environmentally friendly, what their obstacle was and how they overcame it. The students from Lackawanna Trail were then invited to Johnson College to compete against other schools.
