Jazz Service

First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit will hold its annual jazz communion service at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 5.

It will feature the music of some of the jazz fusion "super groups," such as Weather Report, Spyro Gyra, Chick Corea and Return to Forever, and the Pat Metheny Group.

The tradition of a jazz worship service began 19 years when the church could not find a substitute organist for Labor Day weekend. They turned to their pastor, Bill Carter, a seasoned jazz pianist. He invited other musicians to join him in leading the service. It has become a standing-room-only event, and has continued as an annual musical tradition on Labor Day weekend. The service is offered as a gift to the Clarks Summit community. All are welcome to attend.

The featured musicians will be an all-star band of renowned instrumentalists. Along with Rev. Carter on keyboards, Michael Carbone will play saxophone, Tom Westcott will play electric bass with Marko Marcinko on drums. The special guest is David Samuels, a Grammy Award-winning virtuoso on vibraphone and marimba. He is internationally known for his work with Spyro Gyra and the Caribbean Jazz Project.

The music begins at 9:50 a.m. in the church sanctuary, on the corner of School Street and Stone Avenue, one block north of State Street in Clarks Summit. Visitors are advised to arrive early if they wish to get a seat.
