Class Deadline Looms
Friday, Sept. 10, is the deadline for receipt of completed registration forms and payment for classes through the Abington Area Community Classroom.
Classes will be held from Tuesday, Sept. 21, through Thursday, Nov. 11.
Class enrollment is first come, first served. Some classes have size limits; early registration is advised.
A total of 13 courses are scheduled. Here's the lineup:
- Introduction to Stained Glass, instructed by Jay Paulukonis of Paulukonis Stained Glass Studio; $100.
- Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, with Tara Crum, a certified arts educator; $40.
- Beginner Knitting and Felting, led by Jamie Strong, an experienced knitter and pattern creator; $40.
- Fused Glass Jewelry Workshop, with fused glass artist Diane Hrubos; $45.
- Basket Weaving, with prize-winning basket maker Beth Koehler; $27.
- Writing for Children: the Art, the Craft, the Marketplace, with children's author Pat Thomas; $80.
- Writing from the Heart: Creative Non-Fiction, with Jane Honchell, associate professor and theatre director at Keystone College; $40.
- Ballroom Dancing with Jill and Gehred Wetzel, experienced dance enthusiasts and teachers; $45.
- Bird Watching with bird enthusiast Carolyn Crowley; $20.
- Understanding Jazz, with Rev. Bill Carter, pianist, composer and pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit; $30.
- Conversational Spanish, with Ignacio Diaz, adjunct professor at the University of Scranton; $65.
- Low-Maintenance Gardening, with Paul Epsom, owner of Greystone Gardens and celebrity TV gardener; $40.
- Cooking classes; $45 each. Each one-night class will cover a different theme:
- "The Perfect Dinner Party," with Amanda Liples, chef/owner of Atlantic Fish & Fabulous Foods and graduate of the Culinary Institute of America (CIA).
- "Preparing a Healthful, Economic and Delicious Meal for a Family in Modern Times," with Priscilla Capobiano, sous chef at the Elmhurst Country Club and CIA graduate.
- "American Contemporary Restaurant-Style Cuisine at Home," with Sara Trauger, lead chef at State Street Grill; B.A., C.A., Paul Smith's College of the Adirondacks.
- "Cooking with Fresh and Frozen Herbs," with Nancy Carroll Mercanti, owner of Herbs Unlimited.
- 'How to Make Pizza Dough and Sauce," with Gene Romaldini, C.A., Johnson Wales University; and
- "Soups," with Joseph Caputo, owner of Zuppa! del Giorno and Catering by Joseph; CIA, St. Helena, Calif.
Most classes will be taught at either First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit, 300 School St., or Clarks Summit United Methodist Church, 1310 Morgan Highway.
