Juried Photo Exhibit: The Abington Community Library, 1200 W. Grove St., Clarks Summit, will host a juried photography exhibit by the Northeast Photography Club with an opening reception from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2.
Registration is suggested for the reception. All ages are invited. Call 587-3440. The exhibit will remain on display until Thursday, Sept. 30. Photos will be available for purchase with a portion of each sale coming to the library.

Hicks Memorial Tourney: The ninth annual Jim Hicks Memorial Golf Tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at Skyline Golf Course, Petrilak Road, Greenfield Township.
Tournament proceeds will be used to help two area residents battling life-threatening illnesses: Duane McCoy, 31, Jessup, and Jim Fanning, 57, Clarks Summit.
Following the tournament, dinner and drinks will be served about 3:30 p.m. at McDonnell's Grove. The cost is $70 for golf and dinner; $25 for dinner only and half price for children younger than 12.
Organizer are seeking golfers, gifts, prizes and hole sponsorships.

Check BP at Fair: The Kiwanis Wyoming County Fair runs through Monday, Sept. 6. A fair booth run by Mercy Tyler Hospital, Tunkhannock, provides blood pressure checks, education and homemade cookies sold by the hospital's auxiliaries every year.
Kearney Memorial Breakfast: The fifth annual Cindy Collins Kearney Memorial Breakfast to benefit ovarian cancer research will be held on Monday, Sept. 6, at The Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel, 700 Lackawanna Ave., Scranton.
The event will include a traditional breakfast, complimentary mimosa and a raffle to include a variety of gift baskets, gift certificates, jewelry and many prizes.
This year, a special raffle will be held for two beach homes in the Outer Banks, North Carolina. Each beach home has four bedrooms and will be available for one week between October 2010 and April 2011. Tickets for the raffle are $5 each and will only be available at the breakfast. Cost for the breakfast is $30; reservations must be made in advance. All proceeds benefit ovarian cancer research and awareness.
The benefit is in memory of Cindy Collins Kearney, Scranton, who died in 2005.
After four consecutive years of conducting this annual benefit, more than $48,800 has been raised to benefit ovarian cancer research and awareness through the Gilda Radner Familial Ovarian Cancer Registry, www.ovariancancer.com.

Bull Roast: Waverly United Methodist Church, 103 Church St., will hold its 41st annual Labor Day bull roast from 1-5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 6.
The menu will be open-pit roasted beef, parsley potatoes, corn on the cob, baked beans, tomatoes, applesauce, roll, homemade dessert and beverage. Takeouts will be available.

Choral Society Auditions: The Catholic Choral Society will begin its 62nd season on Tuesday, Sept. 7, with rehearsals at 7 p.m. Tuesdays at the IHM Center, Marywood University, Scranton.
The group, composed of members from both Luzerne and Lackawanna counties, performs sacred, classical, Broadway and popular music and welcomes new members. No auditions are required.

Observatory Fall Series: The Thomas G. Cupillari '60 Astronomical Observatory begins its free fall program at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8. The program will continue each Wednesday and Friday evening through Friday, Nov. 12.
The astronomical programs will feature an illustrated lecture and weather-permitted observation through telescopes. The main objects planned for observation include the moon; the planets Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune; and various double stars, star clusters, nebulae and galaxies. The minor planet Pluto may also be observed.
Large groups such as school classes, scouts and community organizations interested in attending a session may contact professor Cupillari at 945-8402 to arrange a private appointment.
The fall sessions at the observatory will be held regardless of sky conditions and will be cancelled only by the threat of severe weather.

Abington Area Community Classroom: Registration forms and payment for classes must be received by Friday, Sept. 10. Classes will be held from Tuesday, Sept. 21, through Thursday, Nov. 11.
Class enrollment is strictly first come, first served. Some classes have size limits; early registration is advised.

'Comm Ball' Returns: The Waverly Community House will host "Comm Ball" - free open gym and basketball - Friday evenings on Sept.10 and Oct. 1, 8 and 22.
Family open gym will take place from 6-8- p.m. on those evenings. Children 12 and younger must be supervised. The gym will be available for players age 16 and older from 8-10 p.m.

Sept. 11 Pledge of Allegiance at Comm: The Waverly Community House will hold a community pledge of allegiance on Saturday, Sept. 11. The brief ceremony will take place at noon at the flagpole.

Free Live Music at Library: "Second Saturdays at the Library" - an offering of free, live music - will begin at the Abington Community Library, 1200 W. Grove St., Clarks Summit, on the second Saturday of each month starting Sept. 11 with the Tony Costa Trio.
Local musicians will play various musical genres from 1-3 p.m. Coffee will be served during the concert, compliments of various local businesses.
Each month the library will also display a rotating collection of visual arts, such as paintings, watercolors and photography.
A juried art exhibit, sponsored by the Northeast Photography Club, will be on display from Sept. 2-30.
The series will showcase music, art and literature in one central location as well as help the library fulfill an ongoing commitment to lifelong learning by promoting interest in the library's collection of music CDs, DVDs, books, sheet music and other materials.
Church Fall Festival: The 43rd annual Our Lady of the Abingtons Fall Festival will be held on the Dalton church grounds Saturday, Sept. 11, and Sunday, Sept. 12.
Saturday events begin with a pig roast at 5:30 p.m. and "The Poets" at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday will feature a chicken barbecue starting at noon with Jake from Froggy 101, followed by the Irish Dancers at 4 p.m. Both days feature hamburgers, sausage, fries, pierogies, pizza fritta, baked goods and fancy pastries. There will be basket raffles, a mum stand, Cafe OLA, a bake stand, bingo, pink elephant sales, a book nook, a silent auction and children's games. A John Deere lawn tractor is the featured grand prize.
The festival runs from 5:30-11:30 p.m. Saturday and 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission and parking are free. For more information, call the church office, 563-1622.

Waverly Antiques Show, Sale: The 67th annual Waverly Antiques Show and Sale will be held at the Waverly Community House on Saturday, Sept. 18, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 19, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission is $5, $4.50 with a show card.
Numerous dealers will present a wide range of items including formal and country antique furniture, jewelry and collectibles.
A gourmet luncheon, prepared by Troy Pierce of Iron Pierce Catering, will be available both days. Visitors may view an English tea garden and obtain appraisals by Dave Crowther of Appletree Antiques, along with seeking deals at Almost Antiques on the Comm's lower level.

Beginners' Bible Study: A free Bible study for people who have had little or no prior exposure to Bible study will begin at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, at The Waverly United Methodist Church, Church Street.
In order to accommodate busy schedules, the study sessions will also be offered Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., beginning Sept. 22.

'Everybody Loves Betty': "Everybody Loves Betty," an auction fundraiser for Betty Bellantoni, will be held from 3:30-6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, at the Fatima Renewal Center in Dalton.
Organized by Team Betty, "An Afternoon of Friends, Fine Art & Treasured Items" will include works of music, artwork, sports memorabilia and at least one vacation destination. There will be food, music and beverages.

Taste of Abingtons: The Rotary Club of the Abingtons will host the sixth annual Taste of the Abingtons from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, at the Inn at Nichols Village Hotel & Spa, 1101 Northern Blvd., South Abington Township. Dozens of selected fine restaurants in the area will provide specialty food items of their choice - from savory appetizers and entrées, to desserts and specialty coffees.
The event offers the opportunity to sample great food, listen to diverse musical entertainment and mingle with family and friends, while contributing to numerous Rotary projects both locally and internationally.

Picturing America: Making Tracks: Monthly discussion groups on rail-related readings, images and a movie are held in the Ryon Room of the Abington Community Library. Registration and materials for the readings are available at the circulation desk of the library, 1200 W. Grove St., Clarks Summit. All sessions are at 7 p.m.

Art Classes: The Waverly Community House will host two six-week drawing/painting classes with instructor Barry Singer.
Classes will be held Thursday afternoons beginning Sept. 23 in the Scout Room at the Comm. The first class, for young artists ages 8-13, will take place from 3:30-4:30 p.m.
The second class, from 4:30-5:30 p.m., is offered to students age 14 and older. Registration, which includes all materials, is $75 for the six-week session.

'Titanic' Speaker: Dr. Robert Ballard, the undersea explorer who discovered the wreckage of the Titanic, will be the featured speaker for the Lackawanna County Library System's American Masters Lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, in the Scranton Cultural Center.
Tickets are free and can be obtained at the Abington and Dalton community libraries.
'Memoirs' Workshop: Author Karen Blomain will conduct a 10-week creative writing workshop called "Memoirs" at the Waverly Community House.
Funded by the F. Lammot Belin Arts Scholarship, the workshop is for aspiring writers high school age and older. The workshop will be held in the Constance Reynolds Belin Room on Wednesdays from 7-9 p.m. beginning Sept. 22 through Nov. 24. The fee is $100.
No writing experience is needed. Just bring your notebook and pen. The workshop is limited to 15 students to allow for individual attention and instruction.

Meditate at Comm: "Inspiring Solutions for Difficult Times" is the theme of a new meditation class at the Waverly Community House, 1115 N. Abington Road.
The most difficult situations can be transformed into opportunities for growth, according to Buddhist monk Samten Kelsang. He will give a talk and lead in a meditation and discussion from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursdays through Sept. 23. The cost is $10; $5 for students and seniors. Dropins are welcome.
Fall Film Festival: The opening night gala of the Dietrich Theater fall film festival in downtown Tunkhannock starts at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24.
The gala features hors d'oeuvres and wine, two films - "Mao's Last Dancer" and "Get Low" - and desserts by Epicurean Delight.
Hors d'oeuvres will be provided by Twigs Restaurant, Seasons Restaurant and Epicurean Delight. A door prize of a six-month movie pass for two will be given away that evening. Reservations are required for gala night only. Proceeds from the evening will help support cultural programming for children at the Dietrich. Reserved seating is available. Tickets are $50. Attic Shop Reopening: The Attic Shop, an upscale consignment shop hosted by the Waverly Women's Club, will open Wednesday, Sept. 29.
The nonprofit shop, located in the lower level of the Waver Community House, 1115 N. Abington Road, is open Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to noon and on the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 5:30-8 p.m.
Prior to the opening, special consignment days will be held Monday, Sept. 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 6:30-8:30 p.m., and Tuesday, Sept. 28, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A maximum of 15 items may be consigned in a 24-hour period.
Regular consignment hours are Wednesdays from 9:30-11:15 a.m. and the first and third Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m.
The Attic Shop features top of the line, name-brand clothing for all ages as well as jewelry, handbags, shoes and household items at low prices.
Winter clothing will be accepted through January. Articles must be cleaned and pressed. All household items must be clean and in working order. No shoes will be accepted.
The consignor receives half of the selling price. The Attic Shop receives half as commission.
Clothing that is clean, in style and suitable for sale may be donated. Jewerly, dishes and household items may also be donated.
From September through April, donations will be accepted at the Attic Shop during shop hours and on Mondays between 9:30-11:30 a.m.
All items are tax deductible and a receipt will be furnished upon request.
All proceeds are donated to charity.

Airing of the Quilts Exhibit: A free "Airing of the Quilts" exhibit will be shown at the Dietrich Theater in downtown Tunkhannock from Friday, Oct. 1, through Friday, Nov. 12, during movie times or by appointment.
The exhibit features quilts by Tunkhannock veteran quiltmaker Betty Ball. Known for her fine appliqué, she has won many awards at local quilt shows and received an award for the best overall quilt block at the Pennsylvania Farm Show.

'Call for Entries': "Call for Entries" for the sixth annual Glenburn Township Art Show and Sale.

Illusionist, Comedy Team at BBC: Christian illusionist Harris III and 321 Improv Comedy will bring their unique brand of entertainment to Baptist Bible College & Seminary this fall.
They will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, in the Phelps Student Center as part of the week-long "Celebration on the Summit" on campus.

Help for Disabled Persons: Lackawanna County Coordinated Transportation is offering reduced-fare transportation to persons with disabilities living in rural areas of the county.
Those eligible must live in Lackawanna County, be 18 to 64 years old and have a disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
