The children’s and youth programs of the Choral Society of Northeast Pennsylvania, now in its 15th year, are holding auditions for new members.
The Choral Society offers six choral ensembles to children and youth from five to 18 years old: Cantus Novus (Kindergarten through second grade), under the direction of Leslie Moran; Cantilena (grades 3-5), under the direction of Alissa Swarts; Kantorei (treble voices, grades six-12), under the direction of Leslie Moran; Chanteuses (high school-aged mixed voices), under the direction of Susan Kelly and Alissa Swarts; Camerata (changed male voices, grades six-12), under the direction of Alissa Swarts; and Cantare (select high school-aged female voices), under the direction of Susan Kelly.
Each of the above ensembles rehearses weekly at the Trinity Baptist Church, 1546 Monsey Ave, Scranton. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings: 5:30-6:15 p.m. for Cantus Novus; 5:30-6:45 p.m. for Cantilena; 6:15-7:45 p.m. for Kantorei, 6:15-7:30 p.m. for Camerata/Chanteuses; and 6:15-8:45 p.m. for Cantare.
As part of the program, all students also receive instruction in music reading and theory skills within the rehearsal time. Each ensemble will perform in formal concerts in November, March and May and will also join with the adult Symphonic Chorus for a holiday program. Performances beyond the regular concert season have included a concert tour of Wales and England, participation in the Music in the Parks competitions at Dorney Park, performances with the NEPA Philharmonic for their holiday concerts and performances at state conferences of both the American Choral Directors’ Association and Pennsylvania Music Educators’ Association.
Membership in an ensemble requires an audition with the conducting staff, with auditions scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 21. No previous singing experience is required.
