The Marywood University PEACE (People Encouraging a Cooperative Environment) club will host a purse sale at Everything Natural, 426 S. State St., on Sunday, April 28, from 12:30-3:30 p.m. The club will offer a free four-day student-run camp this summer to teach elementary school-aged children the foundations of peace, problem solving, and working together in order to better ourselves, each other, and the environment. In order to run the camp at no cost, the PEACE club has partnered with Daakye, a fair trade social enterprise that sells African purses made in Ghana. The sale of one purse funds one child in Ghana's education for one week.
The Countryside Community Church, 14011 Orchard Drive, Clarks Summit, will host its annual rummage sale and bake sale on Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature "Grandma's Attic" with antiques and collectibles and two church pews will also be for sale. Donations of household goods, small appliances, antiques, vintage items, collectibles and baked goods are needed. A bag sale will begin at 1 p.m. that day. The Voluntary Action Center (VAC) will host its annual Run for the Roses fundraiser on Saturday, May 4, from 3-7 p.m. at the Waverly Country Club, 903 N. Abington Road. Participants will be able to support the VAC while watching the Kentucky Derby. Tickets are $75, which includes hors d'oeuvres, dinner and cocktails. The Countryside Community Church, 14011 Orchard Drive, Clarks Summit, will hold its annual Dutch Auction on Friday, May 10. A pot luck covered dish dinner will begin at 6 p.m. with the auction following. Donations of gifts for the auction may be wrapped or unwrapped.
Proceeds from the auction will benefit the church's "Warm Hugs" outreach, which gives away warm shawls to people in need, such as chemotherapy patients and nursing home residents. Call 587-3206 or visit www.countryside-church.org for more information.
Flea Market/Craft Show Planned
The Joseph W. Hall Memorial Auxiliary to the Clarks Summit Fire Co. will host its seventh annual flea market and craft show on Saturday, June 1, at the fire hall, 321 Bedford St., Clarks Summit. Vendor set up will take place between 6-8 a.m. and the show will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Indoor spaces are available for $20; outdoor spaces are available for $15. After Saturday, May 18, spaces will cost an additional $5. Call Nancy at 586-8061 to reserve a space.
Camp Invention, a week-long summer day program for children entering grades one through six, will be held at Abington Heights Middle School, 1555 Newton-Ransom Blvd., from Monday, July 15, to Friday, July 19.
Camp Invention encourages children to discover their own innate creativity and inventiveness through hands-on science, technology, engineering and math content.
This year's Camp Invention program is GeoQuest, which features the "I Can Invent: Launchitude" module, where children combine physics and re-engineered household items to create the ultimate duck chucking device.
