Fall Book Sale
The Friends of the Abington Community Library will hold its annual fall book sale to benefit the Abington Comunity Library on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church, located at the corner of the Morgan Highway and Grove Street, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Friends of the Abington Community Library ask that members of the group volunteer to help put out the material on Friday, Oct. 12, from 3 p.m. until the work is complete. When all the books have been set up, volunteers are invited to preview the sale.
Flea Market/Bake Sale
Abington Manor, 100 Edella Road, will host an outdoor flea market and bake sale on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. No early birds. The rain date will be Sunday, Oct. 14.
The Lake Winola Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary will host a pasta dinner on Saturday, Oct. 13, beginning at 4 p.m. at the Lake Winola Fire Hall. A choice of sauces will be available. Tickets are $9 for adults; $7 for children age 12 and younger. Call 388-2564 or 219-2034 for more information.
The 2012-2013 Arts at First Presbyterian concert series will begin with a performance by the Great Valley Chamber Music Society on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit, 300 School Street. This concert will feature the works of Brahms, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Poulenc, Ravel and Saint-Saens, performed by Thomas Hrynkiw (piano), Nick Driscoll (clarinet), Thomas Heinze (oboe) and Edward Wargo (flute). The Great Valley Music Society, founded by Hrynkiw, is a group of performers who live and teach in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The series has been supported in part by grants from the PA Partners in the Arts program and from the Lackawanna County Community Arts and Culture program. The Sandvik Retirees Association will meet on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 10:30 a.m. at Denny's Restaurant on the Scranton-Carbondale Highway. All retirees and spouses of retirees are welcome.
Book and Bake Sale
The Dalton Community Library will hold its fall book and bake sale on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year's sale will feature a large selection of adult and juvenile fiction and nonfiction at low prices as well as magazines, paperbacks, recordings and some surprise items. The Dalton Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary will host a spaghetti dinner on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the fire hall, located on Turnpike Road. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for children ages 6-10. Children age 5 and younger will be admitted for free. Call 563-1268 for more information.
Country Christmas Fair
The Clarks Summit United Methodist Church, 1310 Morgan Highway, will host a country Christmas fair on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $1; children younger than 12 are admitted for free. More than 50 vendors will be present with candles, purses, hand-knitted items, hand-woven rugs, jewelry and more. Homemade baked goods, Welsh cookies, relishes and a "pick your own cookies" booth will also be available. Breakfast and lunch will also be sold. Call 587-2571 for more information.
The Abington Business and Professional Association (ABPA) is hosting "Diva Night Out in the Abingtons" on Wednesday, Oct. 24, from 6-9 p.m. at the Nichols Village Hotel and Spa on Northern Boulevard. Tickets are $20 and are available through advance sales only. The evening will feature food, desserts, a cash bar, mini-pampering stations, a fashion show, silent auction, entertainment, vendors and other special treats. Off-site parking is available with a limo shuttle. Winter Sports Physicals
The Abington Heights School District will host winter sports physicals on Thursday, Oct. 25, at the high school field house on Noble Road. Cost is %15 per student. Junior high physicals will take place from 2:30-4 p.m. and high school physicals will take place from 4-6:30 p.m.
Family Halloween Party

The Kadampa Meditation Center of New York will host a series of meditation classes at the Waverly Community House, 1115 North Abington Road, on Thursdays through Nov. 1 from 7-8:30 p.m. with Buddhist monk Gen Samten Kelsang. The class topic will be "Solutions" and will focus on finding simple solutions to the problems that arise in daily life. Classes are self-contained; drop in any week. Cost is $10 per class.
