The annual Abington Heights Back-to-School Carnival will be held on Friday, Aug. 29, from 5-8 p.m. at the High School, 222 Noble Road, Clarks Summit. This free community carnival will include music, games and fire truck rides and will be held rain or shine. Food will be available for purchase. The “Meet the Comets” program will begin at 8 p.m.
Choral Society Opens
The Catholic Choral Society will begin its 66th year on Tuesday, Sept. 2, with rehearsals on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. at the IHM Center at Marywood University. The group, composed of members from both Luzerne and Lackawanna counties, performs sacred, classical and secular music at performances in both Luzerne and Lackawanna counties. New members are welcome and no auditions are required. The group’s first concert will be its annual November Generations Concert when the Catholic Choral Society hosts and features regional choral groups from elementary school through college at St. Peter’s Cathedral. Fall hours for the Newton Recreation Center, 1814 Newton-Ransom Blvd., will be weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon and from 3-8:30 p.m. Saturday hours will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday hours will be from noon to 5 p.m. These hours will run from Tuesday, Sept. 2, through Sunday, May 31.
Y Wellness Mondays

The Newton-Ransom Volunteer Fire Co. will host a breakfast buffet on Sunday, Sept. 7, from 8-11 a.m. at the fire hall, located at 1890 Newton-Ransom Blvd. The all-you-can-eat buffet is $8; $4 for children younger than 12.
Book Club Meeting
The Mysteries and Detectives Book Club will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Abington Community Library, 1200 W. Grove St., Clarks Summit. The selection for September is “Stranger in Paradise” by Robert B. Parker.
The Marywood University Lifelong Learners will host a bus trip bus trip on Wednesday, Sept. 24, to the Downton Abbey exhibit at the Winterthur Museum in Delaware.
