Youth Sportsmen’s Day

NEPA Delta Waterfowl and the Factoryville Sportsmen’s Club will co-sponsor a youth sportsmen’s day on Saturday, May 31, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Factoryville Sportsmen’s Club, Lake Winola Road. The event will include gun safety demonstrations, 22 and clay bird shoots, duck identification seminars, information on quality deer management, duck and goose calling, retriever training sessions, trapping demonstrations, turkey calling and interactive games. Comedy Event and Conference

Baptist Bible College and Seminary (BBC&S), Venard Road, South Abington Twp., will host its annual LYFE Women’s Conference from Thursday, May 29, through Saturday, May 31, and from Thursday, June 5, through Saturday, June 7. The LYFE Women’s Conference includes focused workshops, worship and guest speakers; this year’s theme is “Breathe,” which will highlight finding strength to breathe in times of stress, fear and pain. The keynote speaker is Christie Lothamer, a BBC alumna who currently serves in England. Conference registration and costs are available at bbc.edu/lyfe.

During the conference, Christian comedienne and author Anita Renfroe will be featured on Friday, May 30, and Friday, June 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Recreation Center. Tickets are $20 in advance and available online at bbc.edu/events. Tickets are $25 at the door.

Sports Physicals

Abington Heights School District sports physicals for the 2014-’15 school year will take place on Tuesday, June 3, from 2:30-6 p.m. at the Abington Heights High School Field House, 222 noble Road, Clarks Summit. Physicals are $15 per student. There will be no August physicals this year but any physical taken after Sunday, June 1, will be valid for the entire school year. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania mandates that all 11th-grade students need physicals. Athletic forms for first-time athletes include PIAA State CIPPIE forms and Abington Heights Code of Conduct paperwork; these may be downloaded from the sports page at ahsd.org. PSU Extension Celebration

Penn State Extension of Lackawanna County will celebrate 100 Years of service to county residents and will present the 2014 Thomas B. Jurchak Award to Hilda Lewis for her 50 years of volunteer service to youth as a 4-H leader at its 2014 annual meeting on Saturday, June 7, from 9-11 a.m., at the Abington Senior Center, 1151 Winola Road, Clarks Summit.

Healthy snacks will be served using approved Penn State program recipes. At the conclusion of the meeting, tours of the Abington Community Garden will be offered, along with Penn State Extension program displays.

The Thomas B. Jurchak Award is presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the Penn State Extension of Lackawanna County for advancing its goals of education in agriculture, family living, youth and community development. Thomas B. Jurchak was the county extension director and dedicated 38 years of service to Lackawanna

County.

Book Club Meeting

The Mysteries and Detectives Book Club will meet on Tuesday, June 10, at the Abington Community Library, 1200 W. Grove St., Clarks Summit. This month’s selection will be a reader’s choice of any of the Lew Archer detective stories by Ross Macdonald. The author for July will be Tarquin Hall.

Calli Car Show

The 10th annual Calli Memorial Car Show will be held on Sunday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fleetville Fire Co. grounds off Route 407. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Northeast Pennsylvania. The event is held in memory of Calli Irene Walter, who died of Leukemia at four years old in 2003.

The event will feature food, live entertainment, a flea market and more. Trophies will be awarded in all classes and pre-registered cars will receive a goodie bag at the gate. There is free admission as well as free vendor spots; car registrations are $8 in advance and $10 the day of the show. Vacation Bible School

The Clarks Summit United Methodist Church, 1310 Morgan Highway, will host its “Weird Animals” vacation Bible school from Monday, July 14, through Thursday, July 17, from 5:45-8 p.m. Donations of canned goods for the Dalton Food Pantry will be accepted.
