The Scranton District Dental Society (SDDS) recently named Joseph R. Karam, DMD, of Clarks Summit as its new president. Karam is a resident-trained specialist in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics.
Born in Scranton, he is a graduate of Abington Heights High School. He earned his bachelor of science degree in neuroscience after three years of study from the University of Pittsburgh. He continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, earning his doctor of dental medicine (D.M.D.) degree and graduating as valedictorian of his class. Dr. Karam was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon honor society and received several more honors, including an award from the International College of Dentists for outstanding leadership and professionalism and an award from the Pierre Fauchard Academy for exemplary moral and ethical service to the community and profession.
Karam went on to complete a three-year residency and earned a certificate of advanced study of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). During his residency program, he also served as a preclinical instructor at the University of Pittsburgh and conducted extensive research on topics ranging from fluid homeostasis to tissue engineering and biomaterials. He has received grant funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has published scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and delivered lectures at conferences around the country. For his work in dental regeneration, he won several research-related awards and received national recognition from the American Dental Association and Densply. Karam is also active in orthodontic appliance design and has patented an orthodontic bracket system.
His clinical interests include the multidisciplinary orthodontic treatment of children, teens and adults and caring for patients with craniofacial anomalies. He has successfully completed phases I and II of the American Board of Orthodontics examination and is board eligible. Karam has been trained with the latest advances in clear orthodontic aligner technology, is certified by Invisalign and has authored peer-reviewed articles specifically on clear “invisible” orthodontic aligners.
Karam is also a member of the Third District Dental Society, the Tri-State Dental Society, the American Association of Orthodontists and the Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists. He serves as a delegate of the Pennsylvania Dental Association and sits on the board of directors for the Scranton Chamber of Commerce.
Karam owns Karam Orthodontics, PC, with locations in Scranton, Clarks Summit, Mountaintop, Wilkes Barre and Hazleton. He and his wife, Emily, live in Dalton, with their three children, Jackson, Quentin and Madox.
The SDDS is a voluntary organization comprising approximately 150 local member dentists. It is a constituency of the American Dental Association (ADA), the largest and oldest national dental society in the world, and the Pennsylvania Dental Association (PDA). The SDDS oversees activities like Children’s Dental Health Month, public education, school visitations and continuing education for dentists.
The mission of the SDDS is to provide dentists with a forum to discuss pertinent issues that relate to the practice and regulation of dentistry as it pertains to the health and general well being of the communities they serve.
