Achievers Club Café: Children up to grade four and adults are invited to the Achievers Club Café Night at the Abington Heights Middle School for a fun night of literacy from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10.  
Organized by students and facilitators, the café will feature stories, crafts and cookies; pre-K to grade four. A donation of your choice will be accepted at the door, benefitting the Abington Community Library (snow date: Dec. 11).

Glenburn Art Show, Sale: The Glenburn Township fifth annual art show and sale continues at the Glenburn Township Building, 3110 Waterford Road, Dalton, through Thursday, Dec. 10.
Admission is free. Original artwork by many local artists is available for sale.
A variety of works in many media is offered. Once again, you can vote for the “People’s Choice” award.

BBC Winter Concert: Baptist Bible College students and faculty will perform their annual winter concert in the Murphy Memorial Library at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, and at 3 and 8 p.m Saturday, Dec. 12. A special dessert reception will be held one hour before each program in the Jackson Hall Rotunda.
Dessert and concert tickets are $10. Discounted tickets at $5 each are available for students, alumni, parents and employees.

Used Sports Equipment Sale: Abington Heights Athletic Department will sell used sports equipment and uniforms Saturday, Dec. 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Abington Heights High School, 222 Noble Road, Clarks Summit.

Children’s Christmas Party: The annual children’s Christmas party, sponsored by the Chinchilla Junior Firefighters and the South Abington Lions Club, will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at the Chinchilla United Methodist Church on Layton Road.
The party will be held at the church this year due to remodeling at the Chinchilla fire house. It will feature entertainment, refreshments, gifts and Santa arriving by fire engine.

Rec Center Volunteers Wanted: Are you interested in volunteering at the Newton Recreation Center?
The rec center committee meets the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. The committee is looking for new ideas and energy. Newton Township residents who are interested or have questions are asked to call the Newton Recreation Center, 586-7808.

Wreath Making: Celebrate the season naturally by creating your own pine-cone wreath from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at Lackawanna State Park, Route 407, North Abington Township.
Led by Gerry and Len Janus, this program will demonstrate the art of pine-cone wreath making.
Bring your hot-glue gun if you have one, along with your artistic interpretation. Pine cones, wreath forms, glue sticks and some hot-glue guns will be provided. There is a $5 materials fee payable the day of the program. ‘Grapes’ Auditions: Auditions for “The Grapes of Wrath” at the Dietrich Theater in downtown Tunkhannock are Saturday, Dec. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Actors needed are seven women, ages 14-80, and 18 men, ages 12-80, and musicians who play guitar, banjo, fiddle and other instruments for folk, country and bluegrass music. Actors will be asked to read from the script; copies of scenes are available at the theater and at www.dietrichtheater (click on Events, then Cultural Events and finally, Grapes of Wrath Audition Notice).
Musicians will be asked to play a short piece of music of their choice.
The play will be presented March 10-14, 2010, at the Dietrich Theater. Call 996-1500 for an appointment.

Timmy’s Town Center: December events at Timmy’s Town Center at The Mall at Steamtown are as follows:
Dec. 12: Story time with children’s book author Pete Tafuri and his therapy dog, Belle.
Dec. 19, 20: Weather and Santa’s Trip to Pennsylvania with meteorologist Dave Kuharchik.

Timmy’s Town Center is located on the second floor of the mall. The children’s museum was first proposed by Attorney Timothy and Lexie Kelly, Clarks Summit, in memory of their son, Timmy Kelly, 5, who died of brain cancer.

Community Christmas Concert: Wally Gordon Community Chorus will sing its annual Christmas concert Sunday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m. at the Clarks Summit Methodist Church, West Grove Street and Morgan Highway.

Factoryville Church Service: “A Service of Candlelight and Christmas Carols” will be presented at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, at The First Baptist Church, 10 Church St., Factoryville.
Refreshments will be served following the service. The public is invited to the service, sponsored by the New Bethel Fellowship.

‘wHOLYfit Group:’ A “wHOLYfit Group” meets at 6 p.m.  each Tuesday through Dec. 15 at Country Alliance Church, 14014 Orchard Drive (across from Red Barn Village), to discuss “Light and Healthy Holidays.”

Live Nativity: Clarks Green Assembly of God, 204 S. Abington Road, will present a live Nativity representation from Friday, Dec. 18, through Sunday, Dec. 20.  
Complete with live animals, the Nativity will “come to life” at 7:15 p.m. and again at 8:15 p.m. each night. There will also be caroling, cookies and hot chocolate in fellowship hall by the fireplace.

Church Series: Spiritual warfare is the subject of a free eight-week series ending at 11:15 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, at Country Alliance Church, 14014 Orchard Drive, off Newton-Ransom Blvd.
Members of the community are invited to view and discuss a series by Chip Ingram titled “The Invisible War: What Every Believer Needs to Know About Satan, Demons and Spiritual Warfare.”

Attic Shop: The Attic Shop is closed for renovations.
The upscale consignment shop in the lower level of the Waverly Community House, 1115 N. Abington Road, will reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010.

Seeking Volunteers: Clarks Summit Borough is looking for volunteers willing to be a member of its zoning hearing board.
The board generally meets once a month to hear zoning appeals or variance requests.
Volunteers must live in the borough. While the position is not paid, borough manager Virginia Kehoe said it offers “a great way” for people to give to the community. For more information, call Kehoe at 586-9316.

SADD Collecting Cell Phones: Abington Heights High School Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) are collecting cell phones at the high school. All cell phones are cleared and programmed with 911 for use by the elderly. The phones may be dropped off in the main office of the high school.

Social Singles Club: A social singles club meets at 7:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month at Our Lady of Snows Church rectory basement on State Street, Clarks Summit.

• Hatha yoga, svaroopa style, Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., and Saturdays, 10 a.m. Yoga unravels the deep-seated layers of tension in your body and mind. Class includes guided relaxations, yoga breathing and poses. Instructor: Barbara Cohen, $15 per class; $100 for eight weeks.

Yoga Class for Seniors: Yoga class for beginners is now offered to seniors 55 years of age and older at the Abington Senior Center, 1151 Winola Road.
The class is held each Monday at the center from 11:15 a.m. to noon.
