A Celebration of Life
Lindsey's Variety Store, 74 Main St., Nicholson, has been a community staple since 1973. Now, the community is rallying around its owners, Jerry and Marlene Lindsey, after they both were recently diagnosed with cancer.
The Lindsey Family Benefit will be held on Sunday, June 23, from 1-5 p.m. at the Nicholson Carnival Grounds, off Route 92. The event will feature food, music, raffles and a car cruise. All proceeds from the event will help offset medical care for the Lindseys.
"It is going to be a fun day," said Francine Kiryluk, one of the organizers of the benefit. "Jerry and Marlene, along with their four daughters, are lifelong residents of Nicholson. Kids would love to go into their store after school or movies to get candy or odds and ends."
Marlene Lindsey was diagnosed with brain cancer nine months ago and passed away on Wednesday, June 12. Jerry Lindsey has lung and bone cancer and is currently undergoing treatment.
Jerry and Marlene Lindsey would have celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary this July. Kiryluk explained that the couple's strong bond prevailed right up to the last moments of Marlene's life.
"The Friday before Marlene passed away, Jerry was supposed to go to New York City for surgery to remove a piece of lung and bone but refused to go so to be at his wife's side," she said.
Not only will the benefit be a day of fun, it will also include relaxation as the Nichols Village Hotel and Spa will be on hand with a variety of spa treatments, all to benefit the Lindsey family.
"I've been friends of the whole Lindsey family for it seems like forever," Kiryluk said. "Two of their girls have worked by my side at my beauty salon [Francine Kiryluk's Hair Studio] for years and I feel very blessed to call all of them part of our family."
Kiryluk is touched by the outpouring of support by members of the Nicholson community for the Lindsey family.
"Nicholson is a great little community," she said. "When everyone learned that both of them in a few months span were diagnosed with cancer the whole area pitched in."
